Bruker Announces the New Application for Automatic and Precise Determination of Hydrogen in Aluminum with G8 GALILEO Bruker Elemental

Kalkar, Germany - January 12, 2012 – Bruker Elemental has enhanced the broad list of applications of the well-proven analyzer G8 GALILEO ONH with precise determination of hydrogen in aluminum.
In further processing of aluminum, Hydrogen has a strong influence on the quality of the finished product. The high solubility of Hydrogen gas in molten aluminum decreases during solidification for about two orders of magnitude. Some Hydrogen may be incorporated in voids or accumulating in grain boundaries. This remaining Hydrogen is responsible for a number of failures in aluminum products, like pore-formation, cracking or blistering.
The well-proven G8 GALILEO offers the right solution for a precise hydrogen determination in aluminum. Working principle is the so-called IGF method where the sample material is melted in an electrode furnace in a graphite crucible in an inert carrier gas flow.
A special temperature/time program makes sure that evaporation of the low melting material is significantly reduced to minimize contamination of the furnace area and potential memory effects. The automatic melting point detection method is applied with sample masses > 1.5 g As soon as the point of fusion of the aluminum sample is detected by the pyrometer the power of the furnace is switched off and the sample smoothly is melting without evaporation of the material.
The evolved measuring gas H2 is detected by a high-stable and sensitive thermal conductivity cell (TCD). Simple and reliable calibration of the analyzer is guaranteed by the optionally integrated gas dosing unit with ten different volumes.
The G8 GALILEO features:
• Contact-free optical measurement of the real temperature of the graphite crucible
• Rotating sample port for big samples
• Optional gas dosing unit with 10 different volumes for automatic calibration
• Optional automatic crucible changer
• Optional furnace cleaning device with external vacuum cleaner
• Optional automatic sample loader for fully automatic, unattended operation
• Clearly and simply structured Bruker “One-For-All” software interface with intuitive operation
• Available in various configurations as ON/H analyzer, as ON or OH simultaneous analyzer or as single element analyzer for O, N or H
