CAT SRL has recently manufactured a spur pinions test rig for pitting and scuffing tests, to be used for a research project of POLITECNICO DI MILANO to assess and compare the pitting resistance of two case hardened and two nitrided steels, commonly used as material for the industrial gears.

The spur gear test machine is a back-to-back gear rig with 91.5 centre distance. The rig re-circulates power in a close-loop torque regenerative arrangement. Test gears at one end are connected to helical slave gears at the other end by two parallel shaft. One shaft is equipped with a strain gage system in order to measure the applied torque. Two separate lubrication systems are employed for salve and test gears.
