CogniTens, part of the Hexagon Manufacturers of metrology group and a leading provider of 3D optical measurement solutions, announced today that as part of its latest CogniTens software version 3.71 it is extending its supported shop floor metrology capabilities to include measurement of continuous edges on parts and assemblies. With this latest addition, CogniTens optical measurement systems can automatically measure complete internal and external edges and support real-time dimensional inspection and quality analysis.

This new CogniTens module provides comprehensive support for the dimensional measurement process including:

- Automatic definition of edge lines based on CAD data
- Effortless process for measuring edge lines
- Capturing of continuous edge line 3D positions
- Full visualization of measurement results and deviation analysis
- Integrating edge line results to CoreView format outputs
- Exchanging edge line measurement data with various third-party software and proprietary systems using common data formats

This full set of metrology capabilities is optimized for supporting dimensional qualification of trimmed and hemmed edges, which are common in the automotive, aerospace and other manufacturing industries. Full edge line measurements results extend the use of large data set dimensional information and are expected to be integrated into a variety of industry process and applications such as virtual part matching and root cause analysis, problem solving on forming and trimming tools, hem line tuning during assembly, deviation analysis of trimmed sheet metal blanks, reverse engineering of existing parts and similar.
