Technical innovations regarding “housed” rotating unions for machine tools

The “housed” or “complete” rotating unions – i.e. those fitted with own manufacturer of bearings – also feature interesting novelties for the equipment tools industrial sector. And this in more than one aspect!

Accordingly, a new series model shows the common features such as smooth running accuracy bearing, the well proven floating seal with Viton membrane and the seal ring from silicon carbide; besides, the absolute novelty is the two-step labyrinth.

Behind all this is one main thought:
The "POP-OFF" rotating union produces a minimum leakage during the switching operation, i.e. between dry run and coolant operation. This leakage is carried away by the first labyrinth step and the primary leakage port. In case of seal damage and also in case of improperly laid, bent or clogged lines, the leakage may increase considerably.

The new development with two-step labyrinth takes up this excessive leakage and carries it away through the secondary port.
Additionally, a leakage sensor can be mounted at the secondary port which transmits a message to the machine control and/or operator, if applicable.
If the rotating union is replaced immediately after this message, costly consequential damages can be avoided.

This possibility allows us to penetrate the sensor technology range which in terms of mechatronics offers great advantages and future prospects.
