Making safety calculable Elster Kromschröder counts on SIL and PL Elster Kromschröder
Thermoprocessing equipment must comply with high levels of safety and reliability so that the lowest possible risk levels are generated for people, the environment, products and processes in the event of a malfunction. Probability-based approaches to risk assessment and prevention are now becoming increasingly popular in this area of application – such as Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Performance Level (PL) classification. Comprehensive risk analyses, which are the best possible way of identifying any potential risks, are at the heart of these considerations. The precisely harmonized measures of the individual safety functions for minimizing risks are then based on these.
For Elster Kromschröder, this is an important step in the right direction, since safety is not only assessed in terms of quality, but also in terms of quantity. Numerous Elster Kromschröder devices are already SIL/PL certified and all safety requirements are taken into account as early as the construction stage. Thus, pressure switches DG and the automatic shut-off valves of the VAS 1 series can be used up to SIL 3 and PL e. This also applies to automatic burner control units of the PFU series and to protective system control FCU 500, which is completely new to the market. Since an external testing body carries out certification as of Level 3, the company works in collaboration with the German technical inspection authorities TÜV Rheinland, TÜV Süd, and KIWA Gastec in the Netherlands.
“We welcome this trend because it adds another building block for the targeted, safety-related optimization of thermoprocessing equipment to the tried-and-tested risk prevention measures,” says Ulrich Engelmann, Process Heat Product Manager at Elster Kromschröder. It has always been one of the company’s design principles to ensure that the safety circuits in systems and subsystems be precisely adjusted to every possible risk. “Our success is due to the fact that we can provide tailor-made solutions for every requirement made of the protective system. This, of course, also applies to SIL/PL and we will continue to consistently align our product range to this,” Engelmann adds. “Our approach is to keep optimizing the basic hardware and software of our components from a safety technical point of view and beyond that, to implement the functional requirements made of components for thermoprocessing equipment in a user-friendly way.”
Elster Kromschröder can provide interested companies with targeted and comptent support when redesigning safety functions pursuant to SIL and PL Standards. Your contacts are the specialists in the individual branch offices who develop individual and system-specific solutions together with the respective customers.
