Extending and retracting cylinders without directional valves

The new KAM type compact power unit is ideal for saving space and energy with hydraulics. A pump capable to change the rotation direction can realize changes in the direction of movement without a 4/3-way directional spool valve. It can be used for applications where cylinders are to be extended and retracted or at hydraulic motors where the direction of rotation frequently changes. For consumers with an area ratio of 1:1, the directional spool valve can be completely omitted. The KAM can also be used for differing area ratios. In this case, all that is required is a pressure controlled valve, which ensures that the excess oil is returned into the housing. Omitting the 4/3-way directional spool valve generates further advantages, beside reduced costs. It makes an additional 24V DC power supply for the spool valve superfluous. Not to mention the saved space, as the entire pump plus controls can be tucked away even in confined installation spaces. Typical fields of application are to be found wherever heavy loads must be moved into alternating directions. This includes, among other things, building equipment, where large folding gates, window facades or water gates are opened and closed, or generally where swivel drives are used. The KAM’s maximum permitted operating pressure is 170 bar and the maximum flow delivered is 12 lpm. The power unit is easy to transport due to its compact design with submersed electric motor and pump integrated in one housing. It can be operated both in vertical or horizontal position. Its finned tube construction guarantees that the power unit has an optimal cooling performance.
