Optical Length and Velocity Measurement Substitutes Measuring Wheels

INTACTON GmbH, a subsidiary of the FRABA group, has developed an optical motion sensor which enables precise non-contact length and speed measurement of sensitive yard goods (e.g. textiles, coated or sticky surfaces, steel wool and foam rubber). The new OPTIPACT sensors are maintenance-free and similarly priced to conventional, contact-based industrial measuring systems consisting of measuring professional wheels and industrial encoders. Sensitive materials are neither touched nor damaged, which results in significant benefits for a wide range of applications. Furthermore, measuring errors caused by slip, deformation or accumulated dust and dirt are eliminated. OPTIPACT thereby enables reliable measurement of speed and position, ensuring careful material handling. The sensors are designed for a speed range of up to 4 m/s and have a maximum resolution of 15 µm. Due to their small dimensions, they are easy to integrate into almost any automation environment. They are connected to higher-level automation controllers via incremental or SSI interfaces. The supply voltage is either 5 or 10...30 V.
