Press release from J.P. Sauer & Sohn - 2008-01-21

Who and what is Sauer-Nanjing?

The boom in the Chinese economy is something which everybody is talking about. Shipbuilding in particular is an area where the Chinese are becoming more and more dominant and would like to become market leaders. Almost all of the shipping companies that order new builds have already built or at least asked for an offer for a ship from one of the many Chinese shipyards.
The quality of a ship is determined by the shipowners site supervisors but first and foremost by the agreed Maker’s List. Each of the shipping companies are interested in agreeing upon as many manufacturers as possible with whom they have had good experience in the past, and whose products meet the high quality requirements for the type of ship.

Cheap products have expensive consequences
For this reason, Chinese products are only rarely chosen for operationally important parts and parts which are relevant for safety such as starting-air compressors. If Chinese compressors are installed for specific reasons these often need replacement after only a short
period of time. This was what happened to a North-West German shipping company. The argument that the compressor had only cost 500 USD and had been “really cheap” was no longer an argument.
Another important reason against the usage of these compressors is the lack of servicing possibilities and the availability of spare parts for Chinese products.

Important information for our customers
Chinese manufacturers are pushing to set up cooperations and get licenses especially for engines and other large equipment. In this regard we would like to inform our customers about the status of the Chinese compressor manufacturing
