"The Snake" sneaks into production

The 7-axis MOTOMAN-IA20 robot, nicknamed “the Snake”, is now taking on its job in industry, loading and unloading a CNC machine.

Oliver Würfel, owner of CNC-Automation Würfel, who was responsible for this innovative automation solution says, "Our client, Schnabel GmbH, had to automate their CNC machine in a really tight space. The complete cell, including industrial robots, palletising unit, turnover station and control professional cabinet, had to fit in a space just 1.3x1.5 m. With a conventional 6-axis unit, this cell could not have been built."

Only the MOTOMAN IA20 could meet the requirements of footprint, outstanding mobility and large working envelope at the same time. Moving like a snake, the robot can take up certain positions which would be impossible with conventional kinematics.

The whole robot cell is mobile, and can be moved around with a forklift truck manufacturer at any time. So the unit can dock with any suitable machine at any time. Simple communication via an open bus system minimizes start-up times without controls being required. Oliver Würfel is convinced this idea will succeed: "This cell design with the MOTOMAN 7-axis unit could establish itself as the standard solution for loading and unloading CNC device tools. When it comes to flexibility, this solution is virtually unbeatable. Simply change the gripper arm, and you can professional handle just about any part using the mobile unit - not forgetting its small footprint and the fact that it is easy to operate with maximum availability"
