Planar's TFEL gains new wins in China and the US

Planar Systems, Inc.’s proprietary thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) display technology will be incorporated in industrial products manufactured by Jetronic Technology for China and by a US company specializing in public safety products. The TFEL technology is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and demanding ergonomic conditions. In line with Planar’s strategy to serve specialty display markets, these new TFEL design wins demonstrate the unique capabilities that Planar can offer its customers.
“Planar has seen a 11% growth in EL sales in its past fiscal year, which has been driven by OEMs needing displays for even colder temperatures and the crisp viewing enabled by Planar’s EL technology,” said Doug Barnes, GM and VP of the industrial business unit. “New demand continues to emerge for communication, petro-chemical, and test and measurement equipment that can reliably perform in severe temperature conditions and offer multi-person and wide-angle viewing in industrial environments. Planar’s TFEL design wins demonstrate how this display technology and expertise can enhance user experience and provide competitive advantage to our customers.”
“Planar’s EL display technology is beautiful,” said Thomas Wong, president of Jetronic Technology, LTD. “Planar has helped us educate our designers on the best way to integrate EL into our products. Planar invited our engineers to their facility and provided extensive training. By combining Planar’s TFEL engineering and design with products we make ourselves, we will be able to offer an industry-leading solution at a lower cost than previously estimated.”
The US-based manufacturer of public safety products looked to Planar for a solution that will increase the readability of on-screen data in vehicle-deployed communication products. Rapid cognition of data helps to eliminate distraction-related accidents. Planar’s TFEL display functions at full speed and brightness in extreme temperatures as low as -60° C and as high as +85° C. Planar’s TFEL is perfect for displaying key control data within moving vehicles because the crisp image presentation enables readability at a glance. Unlike LCDs, TFEL is readable through polarized sunglasses.
