Proton Energy Systems to supply electrolysis for submarine life support

Hamilton Sundstrand and Proton Energy Systems successfully qualify next generation electrolysis cell stack for submarine oxygen generation systems

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn., Dec. 1, 2008
Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), and Proton Energy Systems have successfully qualified the next generation electrolysis cell stack for use in nuclear submarine oxygen generating systems.
The design, development and qualification program, initiated in 2007, followed rigorous business and technical processes. This proven "design to cost" approach identified technology improvements that meet system requirements while maintaining or improving the product's quality and reliability. "This milestone validates Proton Energy Systems' selection to supply Hamilton Sundstrand this key military equipment," said Larry McNamara, Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land & Sea director of Strategy and Development. "This success now allows us to provide a low cost, quality product to our Navy customers, and is the first step to continuously reducing the cost of the oxygen generating system that is operating flawlessly today on Virginia Class submarines."
"Proton Energy Systems is dedicated to developing the latest and most advanced hydrogen technologies, and is proud to partner with Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land & Sea to bring the next generation electrolysis cell stacks to fruition," said Rob Friedland, Proton Energy Systems president and chief executive officer.
