Röhm and Mapal jointly developing the next generation of tool clamping system On the ball together: the companies Röhm GmbH from Sontheim/Brenz and Mapal Dr. Kress KG from Aalen are jointly developing the next generation of tool clamping
system. With the combination of the innovative locking unit „Super Lock“ with the brand new „Clamp-by-Wire“ electrical control system, Röhm and Mapal are setting new standards in automatic tool clamping. The joint project allows the rapid and safe exchange of tools with the precise collection and analysis of clamping processes.
The new developments „Clamp-by-Wire“ and „SUPER-LOCK“
were displayed separately at the leading mechanical engineering
trade fairs, the EMO and AMB, in 2007 and 2008. Röhm and Mapal are working together closely to unify the twoconcepts in one product. The main features of the new product are the self-locking clamping set and the linear motor. This means that the spring assemblies and hydraulic units that were previously required are now unnecessary. The components for the electrical
drive have been developed by Röhm and Mapal in cooperation with the company Aradex from Lorch.
The advantages of the new „Clamp-by-Wire“ system for the user are obvious: due to the analysis of forces when clamping the tool, impurities and shavings in the μm range are safely identified together with tolerances of tool holders. The smallest shaving or lack of lubrication is safely discovered so that all inaccuracies can be avoided – a perfect processing result is therefore guaranteed.
Due to the hydraulic-free construction of the „Clamp-by- Wire“, something can be achieved that would have been hard to imagine a few years ago; the hydraulic-free machine. Apart from the advantages that the heat input to the spindle is significantly lower and the user is provided with exact clamping with defined forces, this also allows completely new machine concepts. This is particularly significant with respect to increasing energy prices and the procurement and operating costs for hydraulic aggregates.
Röhm and Mapal are convinced about the path they are taking together; away from the standard hydraulic system towards safe processing and the environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient system of the future. „The consequential promotion of innovations is the focus of both companies”. The General Managers, Dr. Kress
from Mapal and Dr. Fried from Röhm, agree that „our daily mission is to make excellence even better“.
