CoroMill® 490 brings precision and versatility to face and shoulder milling

Sandvik Coromant has launched the first of a new generation of shoulder mills, the CoroMill 490, which reduces machining costs by up to 25 per cent.

CoroMill 490 is a high-precision tool for applications where reduced depths of cut and less final machining are required, as with the near net shape precision forgings and castings used by machine shops for higher productivity. Less, but more precise, work is needed on these castings and forgings. This is possible with the four edge industrial insert design of CoroMill 490 and reduces substantially the cost per component for customers. CoroMill 490 is the most effective tool for these applications. It is so precise that it can produce a finished product in one pass. The maximum depth of cut is 5.5 mm; 4 mm is recommended.

CoroMill 490 offers more productivity gains. Its versatility allows customers to use CoroMill 490 as their standard milling tooling, replacing multiple tool stocks and simplifying industrial production control. The result is lower costs for face and shoulder milling. CoroMill 490 can also be used for contouring and edging, without mismatch, and for slot milling.

Cutting is light and quiet with low cutting forces on the four edge inserts, achieved through high positive rake and axial angles for smooth entry to the material. Low cutting forces arise from innovative insert geometry and new grades in the New Insert Generation of Sandvik Coromant. The insert geometry includes new geometry of the parallel land, giving excellent face surfaces and shoulders.
