When the Schmersal Group introduced the ESALAN Wireless many mechanical engineers were immediately convinced by the advantages of the cable-free technology. As system safety is regarded, Wireless Automation reduces machine downtime and therefore is cost-reducing on the one hand; on the other hand, the protection of the operators against hazardous movements is enhanced. As there are no cables, cable damage no longer can occur and cable repair becomes a thing of the past.
The technology standard for cable-free signal transmission, developed by Schmersal-Elan, meets all the requirements of the harmonized standards for machine safety. The signals are always safely transmitted, even under unfavorable industrial conditions where harmful emissions, the presence of HF sources and interference emanating from other wireless devices can occur. The ESALAN Wireless system is suitable for applications of control category 4 to EN 954-1 or SIL level 3 to IEC 61508, i.e. the highest safety level.
The finished projects with the Wireless devices from Schmersal-Elan reveal that the cable-free transmission of safety-related signals is particularly suitable for special operating modes of machines. In these modes, the operator usually has the safety guards by-passed and the machine working at reduced speed, e.g. to program the professional robot, to trace and repair errors or to observe the process cycles.
