Based on its IS1 remote I/O system, explosion protection expert R. STAHL implements complete signal connection solutions in safe and hazardous areas aboard ships. The DNV- and ABS-certified system, which is suitable for use in zone 1, provides I/O modules for all types of signals. Its approvals permit installation in nearly all locations, ranging from the cargo hold to the open deck. IS1 components are fully suited for maritime applications, featuring seawater resistant materials and a vibration-proof design. They are also highly resistant to electromagnetic influences, fulfilling the strict EMC requirements necessitated by the ship's radio system. All modules, includ-ing CPU and power supply, can be hot-swapped if required. Suitable for copper cable or fiber optic wiring, the intrinsically safe systems can be deployed with full or line redundancy. IS1 supports Profibus DP, provides comprehensive HART integration and can optionally communicate in Industrial Ethernet networks via Modbus TCP. R. STAHL has been implementing offshore installations since the beginning of the 1990s. The company has established a long-time collaboration with the Norwegian Kongsberg Maritime AS, and has supported the Japanese Yamatake Group in a num-ber of projects involving the automation of LNG carriers.
